Our club tenugui was introduced in 2026. It only took us 45 years to have one made. I expect we will keep the same design for a long time.
On the right side, it says “Saskatoon Kendo Club” in kanji and katakana. On the left side, it says “Founded by Ken Miyaoka in 1981” in kanji.
In the middle is calligraphy by Miyaoka-sensei as follows:
円くなれ
只円くなれ
円くなれ
In romaji, that’s “maruku nare, tada maruku nare, maruku nare” which directly translates to “be round, just be round, be round”. The meaning of being round is to smooth out the rough edges of your personality, and the repetition means a process of becoming a better person. Another interpretation is to become more gentle.
These tenugui were made in the traditional way in Japan, with the died-through design.
